Scavenger Hunt

Using the Juvenile Library in the Kalikow Center, I have discovered 5 books that would be of great use in my classroom. My content area would be English, so it is very important to choose books that touch on many important aspects of helping students understand reading and writing. So here are the 5 books!
1. September 11, 2001 - This book could be used as not only to see the author's perspective of a terrible event, but to let my students experience how to express emotion through writing. Inevitably, it would read an a writing excercise of self-expression of feelings, emotions, or life experiences.
2. First Crossing - This story about teen immigrants will inspire students to understand a life different from their own, and gain perspective in such areas.
3. Under the Wolf, Under the Dog - Allowing the children to relate to another person in their age group going through significant mental issues and also issues with family, including cancer.
4. Call Me Ruth - This book is speaking to youth about the meaning of being an American, allowing for students to have a chance to experience outside perspectives of Americans and relate to those perspectives.
5. Darby - This book gives another type of perspective for the students to understand issues with race in the 1900's.

Also using the Kalikow Center's resources and the technology they offer, I have chosen 3 additional items to use in my classroom for general help and understanding in my content area of English.
1. Write:Outloud
2. The Writing Trek

3. Alphasmart 5000

Using the Macs to explore assistive technology I have chosen 3 things I can use in my classroom that would assist students with disabilities in the understanding of the central concepts I will be teaching.
1. Changing settings on the computer, such as the keyboard that would allow the students to be more efficient with their computer skills.
2. Another setting that can be changed, is the one to allow the computer to read back what the student is writing onto the computer, which is a great feature for students with visual impairment.
3. For students with difficulty hearing it would be helpful to use the sound adjustments to get the student to a level of hearing that is comfortable for them.
